I offer an encouraging presence and a safe and accepting space in order for you to consider fresh perspectives and possibilities. I have had the privilege of working in the field of psychology locally and internationally for the past ten years and have seen homeless youth, Stanford University students, the terminally ill, the elderly and adults struggling with mental illness and drug addiction all experience significant healing and growth. My greatest desire is to be a loving presence in your life.

I enjoy dancing, listening to inspiring music, cooking with loved ones, reading a good book and exploring the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Spiritual Direction

Spiritual Direction

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is an ancient tradition where an individual journeys with a spiritual director in the
search for a closer and more vibrant relationship with God.

The goal of Spiritual Direction is a deeper awareness and appreciation of God’s presence and
movement in all relationships and circumstances.

Spiritual Direction involves deep listening, which helps people live more reflective and grateful lives. The contemplative time of a direction session can provide rest and refreshment for weary souls.

Spiritual direction is not about isolating, but rather about learning how our spirituality is meant to be embodied in all aspects of our daily lives. It’s a time for clients to discover their belovedness, and in turn share with others the love they’ve experienced.

The True “Director”
The title spiritual “director” is misleading because it’s the Holy Spirit who is the true director in the room. The Holy Spirit is the true Host, prompting and guiding the agenda while the director and client pay attention to the promptings.

What is a Spiritual Direction session like?
Typically sessions take place once a month for one hour. It’s a safe opportunity for clients to tell God what’s on their mind, to share their longing and to listen for what God might have to say about their current situation. It’s a chance to reflect on life’s events, to bring whatever is on a client’s heart with the desire to notice where God may be working. Clients might talk about how they and God are getting along, what the theme of their life has been the past month, what their current prayer life is like, their desire for discernment in making decisions, or topics related to their relationships.

Spiritual Direction is a unique space to embrace God through:

  • conversation
  • deep listening
  • reflective questions
  • times of silence and prayer
  • poetry
  • art making
  • guided meditation
  • scripture reading
  • dream work

Spiritual Direction could be a wonderful experience for you if you:

  • Desire a closer relationship with Jesus Christ
  • Seek discernment for major life transitions
  • Desire a place to share the questions, sorrows and joys of your spiritual journey
  • Are curious to learn more about:
spiritual practices, (such as silence, gratitude etc.) and different types of prayer
  • Desire space to rest and learn to breathe deeply

Through our sessions, I pray you would experience:

  • greater awareness of God’s presence and voice
  • new ability to live into the wonder and embrace of God
  • freedom to accept and love yourself
  • a growing sense of your purpose and inner calling
  • courage to explore the creative arts as you express yourself
  • a more balanced and disciplined life
  • increased peace and joy
  • greater desire to love and serve your community

Mind-Body Work

Mind-Body Work

I believe in treating the whole person: spiritually, emotionally and physically and thus also offer a
Christian protocol for mind-body work adapting elements from Neuro-Emotional Technique,
Thought-Field Therapy, E.M.D.R (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), and spiritual
warfare. This mind-body technique filters out New Age philosophies and harnesses God’s
remarkable created mechanisms in the body-mind connection. It provides a highly effective treatment procedure for quickly alleviating a wide range of psychological symptoms.

Interventions are based on the belief that the subconscious catalogues the individual’s life experience. The emotions that accompany traumatic life experiences seem to be stored in the body, almost like electrical charges. Previous trauma tends to cause current symptoms. Mind/body interventions are employed to clear previous trauma, thus relieving the current symptom.

You may have rehearsed the truth over and over in your mind, but until the truth is manifested in your broken life experiences and lies and unhealthy vows are broken, complete healing cannot take place.

Differences Between Counseling & Spiritual Direction

Differences Between Counseling & Spiritual Direction

Spiritual direction is not the same as therapy. The content is similar but the method is different.

Case Example:
Julie comes to a session happy because she received a compliment from her boss but she quickly becomes negative.

As Julie’s Therapist I might say, “How quickly you move from this place of joy.” We might then explore why this is and if this has been a common experience throughout her life.

But, as Julie’s Spiritual Director I might say, “At the beginning of the session you were touched by your boss’ words. Let’s pause and see what else God might say in this place of joy.” My response leads us into a time of listening prayer.

Therapy Session
Most therapy sessions begin with a problem and seek resolutions. The relational dynamic that plays out between therapist and clients is talked about because then the client can understand on a deeper level their style of relating and how others experience them.

Counseling may be a better fit if you are struggling with emotional or personality disorders, addictions, or deep family issues, or if you are feeling highly depressed or driven by phobias.

Direction Session
Spiritual direction doesn’t necessarily start with a problem. Instead, it starts with a person’s health and desire for a deeper union with Christ. Often times, someone seeking a spiritual director has spent time with a counselor or currently is engaged in counseling. The session is not about seeking solutions but about seeking God. The goal is not to resolve issues but to seek God’s voice and guidance. The relationship between the spiritual director and the client is important and can be used by God to bring healing, but the real focus is the client’s relationship with God.

We are each made in the image of God, birthed out of love, and thus created to experience loving and fulfilling relationships. Sadly, though, many of our relationships have been deeply impacted by rejection, abuse, fear and heartache. But, the good news is that even though many of us feel stuck and overwhelmed, God desires for us to grow and experience healing, freedom and reconciliation to Himself and to each other.

Therapy Orientation
I primarily work from a relational model of therapy and use existential, family systems and psychodynamic approaches, as well as cognitive behavior approaches as needed. I also use mindfulness techniques as a way to help clients live in and enjoy the present moment.

My approach is holistic as I believe that every aspect of a person-including past experiences, relationships, emotions, biological/physical reactions and nutrition-needs attention. I often recommend that my clients also work with other professionals such as psychiatrists, nutritionists and massage therapists.

My areas of focus include:
• relationship issues
• anxiety
• depression
• chronic pain
• grief/loss
• substance abuse
• isolation/loneliness
• vocation and career
• spirituality issues

Through our meetings together possible benefits include
• freedom to discover and appreciate your uniqueness and calling
• greater understanding of why you face the same struggles over and over
• improved communication skills
• new and healthier ways of interacting with others
• reduced anxiety
• deeper connection in your relationships
• strengthened faith and spirituality
